Pickleball has become the favorite court sport in the nation. The space utilized is only a fourth of a tennis court (30’ x 60’) and involves four participants. A Wiffle ball about the size of a baseball is volleyed using a paddle similar to a table tennis paddle. As the wiffle ball does not travel very far and is slower moving, it allows longer volleys than tennis without as much physical movement by the participants. Hundreds of pickleball courts have been constructed on tennis courts in Central Florida, with multiple leagues having been formed.
To construct a new pickleball court, a 32’ x 62’ area with 6” of limerock and 1 ” of asphalt are required for the playing surface and a 8’ fence is constructed to enclose the court. The asphalt is surfaced similar to a tennis court after installation of the pickleball posts and net.
A single tennis court can be lined so as to use the tennis net as the center of a pickleball court although the tennis net is slightly higher than a pickleball net. Or – a tennis court can be converted into four pickleball courts if the fence is rectangular.
